  • Yes! It’s great for horses whether barefoot or shod! The rip-resistant fabric is incredibly durable and holds up to horses pawing. If your horse is shod, please ensure the nails are close-fitting to the hoof and shoe.

  • Nope! It still retains traction when wet and is a stable place for horses to stand up or lie down.

  • Both! We use it in both locations to allow our horses to choose where to sleep depending on the day and time of year.

The Black colored mattress is recommended for indoor or full-shade only during the hot summer months due to its heat-absorbing quality.

  • Senior horses especially love the mattress! It won’t shift when they are getting up or laying down and provides a secure, soft restful place for them to get sleep. Even the young horses love it!

  • Since the PasturePuff mattress isn’t covering an entire stall or area, horses have the freedom to choose where they want to stand—either on the mattress or off it.

Additionally, the mattress won’t compact or get lumpy over time, thanks to the high-quality memory foam used in its construction. This foam is rated to have no less than 8mm of compression within 10 years, ensuring a consistent and comfortable surface for your horse.

This contrasts with some other alternatives, which often receive feedback about the material compacting or becoming lumpy, leaving horses without a comfortable place to stand if they prefer.

  • Well, that’s probably going to happen, but not to worry! The mattress fabric is moisture-wicking and completely waterproof, and it doesn’t hold onto liquid or become a soppy mess.

It’s easy to clean the manure off with a rake/fork, and dries quickly. You can spray it off with the hose if you like!

  • That depends on your horse! The ones that like to be clean and that tend to go in a particular spot will be unlikely to pee or poop on the mattress.

The ones that don’t seem to care where they go will likely do so on the mattress. Try placing it near to where they eat (if in a stall) or away from where they tend to use the bathroom (if outside) to discourage this behavior.

  • We’ve found the most success by asking your horse to walk on it and over it a few times with a halter and lead rope, similar to how you’d teach them to walk on/over a bridge, tarp or other object.

Once they step on it a few times and accept that it’s safe and don’t seem to be bothered by it, go ahead and turn them loose. Horses naturally seek out soft places to stand and lay, and they will figure out relatively quickly that the soft spot is a pretty nice place to be!

Some horses take to it right away, and some may take a couple of weeks, so don’t fret if your horse doesn’t seem to get it right away.

  • Every horse is different and while some warm up to it immediately, some might take a little more coaxing. If your horse doesn’t want to stand/walk or lay down on it right away, there are a few tricks that work to help:

    • Give it time. Some horses may take a few weeks before deciding to give it a try.

    • Place it where they eat, or feed on it directly.

    • Walk them over it regularly.

    • Move it to a spot where the frequently lie down and/or stand.

    • Pile shavings on it to cover it completely. They may want to pee on it, but if a horse is used to sleeping in shavings, this is a great way to encourage them to spend more time on and around it. Many times horses will try out rolling and then decide to just stay down. After a few days of this, reduce the amount of shavings gradually until none are left on the mattress.

  • We understand that PasturePuff might seem expensive compared to other options, but there are several important reasons behind the cost. First and foremost, our mattresses are proudly made in the USA, ensuring that every person involved in creating them is paid fairly for their work. While we could reduce costs by outsourcing production to countries with cheaper labor or by using inferior materials, that’s not who we are.

At PasturePuff, we’re committed to supporting our local economy and the hard-working people who contribute to it. Additionally, we use only premium quality materials to ensure that our mattresses are durable, comfortable, and built to last.

What truly sets PasturePuff apart are the unique features you won’t find anywhere else. Our mattresses are designed to be versatile and can be used in a variety of environments—not just in stalls. Whether it’s at shows, in mare motels, outdoor turnouts, camping trips, or boarding facilities, PasturePuff offers comfort and convenience without any additional setup or preparation. These mattresses are built to provide maximum comfort wherever your horse needs it.

When you invest in a PasturePuff, you’re not just buying a mattress—you’re getting a superior product that’s versatile, built to last, and ethically made. It’s worth every penny.

  • Yes, the PasturePuff mattress is designed with durability in mind.

We know horses can be hard on...well, everything, so we did in-depth testing specifically for this reason. We’ve tested the PasturePuff with very destructive horses like yours and had no issues—it held up beautifully.

The mattress is designed to withstand pawing (including by shod horses), chewing/biting, and playful behaviors. Our rigorous testing process significantly contributed to the design and helped us select the premium materials used in the PasturePuff.

We don’t want this investment to fall apart, and we’ve crafted the mattress to endure the everyday challenges of equine life.

While no product is completely indestructible in all situations, if the mattress does get punctured or torn, it can be easily repaired using the bonding tape included with your order.

  • The PasturePuff mattress is fully waterproof.

In fact, to prove its waterproof capability, we even tested it in a pool!

The mattress is designed with a heavy-duty YKK waterproof zipper and seam-sealed seams to ensure that water stays out. The fabric is a recycled polyester, laminated on the back with a fully plastic, waterproof layer that acts as an effective barrier against moisture.

While the fabric itself is treated to be waterproof initially, the real protection comes from the laminated layer, which remains waterproof even after the outer treatment wears off with use.

The only way water could get inside the mattress is if it gets punctured or ripped, but in the very rare situation that this might occur, it can be easily repaired using the bonding tape included with your order.

Also, as a side note, because the mattress is waterproof, when a horse stands or lies down on it, no air escapes, causing the corners to pop up slightly—though this doesn’t affect its performance.

How it all Began

Shortly after adopting two ponies, Gracie and Whinnie, for her daughters, Katie found that they struggled with recurring laminitis. Concerned about their comfort during flare-ups, she tried multiple methods to alleviate their pain and make them more comfortable. This included deeply-bedded shavings and deeply-bedded rice hulls (a favorite!), but the ponies were so incredibly messy that it was difficult to keep the bedding both deep AND clean, not to mention expensive and time-consuming!

She also researched stall mattress systems, but the options available didn’t have the depth of padding she was looking for, plus were extremely expensive to purchase, ship and set up. The ponies enjoyed sleeping both inside the stall and in their outside turnout, so the permanent stall mattress solutions wouldn’t work.

The only other solution available was extremely heavy and difficult to move, and still lacked the amount of padding she wanted to achieve for her ponies’ comfort,
so she went to work developing a product that had all the qualities she was looking for.

The mattress had to be:

  • Thick enough to provide support for joints and be an enticing place to lie down

  • Thin enough to be comfortable and stable for standing

  • Completely encased in a waterproof, rip-resistant and lightweight cover that was easy to hose off

  • Able to withstand all weather conditions

  • Overall lightweight and mobile design that can be moved easily by a single person of average strength

  • Heavy enough that it doesn’t go flying in typical wind (maybe move it inside for hurricane-force winds!)

  • Cool enough to touch despite being placed in the full Arizona sun

  • Large enough for the ponies and horses to lay flat to encourage REM-cycle restorative sleep

And just like that, the PasturePuff mattress was created!

How it’s Going

The best part of discovering the perfect relaxation spot for her ponies? The big horses loved it, too!

Her two dressage athletes and yearling each prefer to sleep on the mattress over any other type of bedding or soft sandy spot in their paddock. Her friends began asking how they could get one of the beds, so Katie officially started PasturePuff and is now taking pre-orders!

The product is entirely and proudly created in the United States, and manufactured in beautiful Arizona.
